Backflow is the process in which the intended flow direction of a water system is reversed. Backflow occurs when the water pressure in a building is stronger than that of the city. The city of Toronto has a back flow prevention system in place to prevent contamination in the city's water supply.

Owners of buildings with more than 5 units are responsible to install back flow prevention systems and undergo yearly testing to ensure proper functionality.
